How the names are matched to a nakshatra
Every name is placed by its first sound in the traditional table of 108 naming syllables (four for each of the 27 nakshatras). We follow fixed rules: vowel length is ignored, so Chu and Chū are one sound; श and ष are treated as one sound; for a name that opens with a joined consonant, such as Pra- or Shri-, the first consonant with its inherent “a” is used; and Kri-, Hri- and Vri- are read the same way. A name whose first sound is not in the table has no traditional pada, and the bank says so.
About this bank
The bank holds 748 names. Each meaning is written for this site and kept short and plain; where a name has more than one traditional meaning, the most common is given. The name number comes from the Chaldean letter values (see the numerology calculator), so it changes with the spelling you use. Saved names stay in this browser only and are never sent to us.
Astrology is a traditional system, not a science. Choose a name you and your family love, and confirm the nakshatra, the pada and the final name with your priest.
