About Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. A sister ties a rakhi, a protective thread, on her brother’s wrist and he promises to look after her, usually with a gift in return. It falls on the full moon (Purnima) of the month of Shravana.

The thread has also been tied between friends, neighbours and even to deities and soldiers, and families who live apart often post the rakhi in advance.

How the date is decided

Raksha Bandhan is kept on Shravana Purnima, ideally in the afternoon (Aparahna) while Purnima is running and Bhadra is not. If Bhadra covers the afternoon of the first day, calendars move to the next day when Purnima still holds at sunrise, and the rakhi is tied before Purnima ends.

Frequently asked questions

When is Raksha Bandhan in 2027?

Raksha Bandhan 2027 falls on Tuesday, 17 August 2027 (New Delhi). The tithi runs from 10:29 AM, 16 Aug to 12:59 PM.

Why does the date of Raksha Bandhan change every year?

Raksha Bandhan follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar. It is tied to Purnima (Shukla paksha) of the month of Shravana, not to a fixed Gregorian date. A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, so the date moves earlier by roughly that much each year, until a leap month (Adhik Maas) is added and it jumps back.

Is Raksha Bandhan on the same day everywhere?

Not always. In New York, Toronto the date differs from New Delhi, because tithis are read at local sunrise or sunset and these places are many hours away from India. Use the city table above, or the calendar with your own location.

See it in the calendar. Open the Vikram Samvat calendar for August 2027 and change the city to get dates for your own sunrise.
