About Guru Purnima
Guru Purnima is the full moon of the month of Ashadha, dedicated to teachers and spiritual guides. It is also known as Vyasa Purnima, in memory of the sage Vyasa, who is credited with compiling the Vedas and composing the Mahabharata.
Students offer respect and gifts to their gurus, and it is also observed by Buddhists, who remember the Buddha’s first sermon, and by Jains.
How the date is decided
Guru Purnima is kept on Ashadha Purnima, taken at midday (Madhyahna). If Purnima covers midday on two days, the day on which it is also present at sunrise is chosen.
How it is observed
- Visit or call your teacher or spiritual guide and offer thanks.
- Offer flowers, fruit or a small gift (guru dakshina) as a mark of respect.
- Spend time in study, meditation or reading a scripture.

Frequently asked questions
When is Guru Purnima in 2027?
Guru Purnima 2027 falls on Sunday, 18 July 2027 (New Delhi). The tithi runs from 6:49 PM, 17 Jul to 9:15 PM.
Why does the date of Guru Purnima change every year?
Guru Purnima follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar. It is tied to Purnima (Shukla paksha) of the month of Ashadha, not to a fixed Gregorian date. A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, so the date moves earlier by roughly that much each year, until a leap month (Adhik Maas) is added and it jumps back.
Is Guru Purnima on the same day everywhere?
Not always. In New York, Toronto the date differs from New Delhi, because tithis are read at local sunrise or sunset and these places are many hours away from India. Use the city table above, or the calendar with your own location.
