About Hanuman Jayanti

Hanuman Jayanti celebrates the birth of Hanuman, the devoted follower of Rama known for strength and loyalty. In most of North India it is kept on the full moon (Purnima) of the month of Chaitra, a few days after Ram Navami.

Other regions follow different dates: in Tamil Nadu and Kerala it is observed in the month of Margashirsha (Hanumath Jayanthi), and in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana a longer observance runs from Chaitra Purnima to the tenth day of Vaishakha.

How the date is decided

The North Indian Hanuman Jayanti is kept on Chaitra Purnima, taken at sunrise. If Purnima covers sunrise on one day only, that is the day; otherwise the first of the days is used. Observances in the south follow separate rules and dates.

Frequently asked questions

When is Hanuman Jayanti in 2027?

Hanuman Jayanti 2027 falls on Tuesday, 20 April 2027 (New Delhi). The tithi runs from 4:52 AM to 3:57 AM, 21 Apr.

Why does the date of Hanuman Jayanti change every year?

Hanuman Jayanti follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar. It is tied to Purnima (Shukla paksha) of the month of Chaitra, not to a fixed Gregorian date. A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, so the date moves earlier by roughly that much each year, until a leap month (Adhik Maas) is added and it jumps back.

Is Hanuman Jayanti on the same day everywhere?

Not always. In Sydney the date differs from New Delhi, because tithis are read at local sunrise or sunset and these places are many hours away from India. Use the city table above, or the calendar with your own location.

See it in the calendar. Open the Vikram Samvat calendar for April 2027 and change the city to get dates for your own sunrise.
