About Ram Navami

Ram Navami celebrates the birth of Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, on the ninth tithi (Navami) of the bright fortnight of Chaitra. It closes the nine days of Chaitra Navratri that begin with the Hindu new year.

Temples hold readings from the Ramayana and the Ramcharitmanas, and the celebrations at Ayodhya, where Rama is believed to have been born, draw large crowds.

How the date is decided

Ram Navami is kept on the Chaitra Shukla Navami that is running at midday (Madhyahna), because Rama’s birth is placed at noon. If Navami covers midday on two days, the day on which it is also present at sunrise is chosen. Some state holiday lists follow sunrise alone and can differ by a day.

Frequently asked questions

When is Ram Navami in 2027?

Ram Navami 2027 falls on Thursday, 15 April 2027 (New Delhi). The tithi runs from 3:24 PM, 14 Apr to 1:21 PM.

Why does the date of Ram Navami change every year?

Ram Navami follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar. It is tied to Shukla paksha Navami of the month of Chaitra, not to a fixed Gregorian date. A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, so the date moves earlier by roughly that much each year, until a leap month (Adhik Maas) is added and it jumps back.

Is Ram Navami on the same day everywhere?

Not always. In London, New York, Toronto, Dubai, Johannesburg the date differs from New Delhi, because tithis are read at local sunrise or sunset and these places are many hours away from India. Use the city table above, or the calendar with your own location.

See it in the calendar. Open the Vikram Samvat calendar for April 2027 and change the city to get dates for your own sunrise.
