About Akshaya Tritiya
Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third tithi (Tritiya) of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha. “Akshaya” means imperishable, and the day is believed to bring lasting results to anything begun or given in charity on it.
It is traditionally a day for buying gold, starting new ventures and making donations, and in the Jain tradition it marks the end of the year-long fast of the first Tirthankara, Rishabhanatha.
How the date is decided
Akshaya Tritiya is kept on the Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya that is running in the forenoon (Purvahna). If Tritiya covers the forenoon on two days, the day on which it is also present at sunrise is chosen.
How it is observed
- Begin something new, such as a business, a journey or a house-warming.
- Donate food, water, clothes or grains.
- Buy gold or silver, as the tradition holds, or make a small offering to Lakshmi.

Frequently asked questions
When is Akshaya Tritiya in 2027?
Akshaya Tritiya 2027 falls on Sunday, 9 May 2027 (New Delhi). The tithi runs from 11:43 AM, 8 May to 9:03 AM.
Why does the date of Akshaya Tritiya change every year?
Akshaya Tritiya follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar. It is tied to Shukla paksha Tritiya of the month of Vaishakha, not to a fixed Gregorian date. A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, so the date moves earlier by roughly that much each year, until a leap month (Adhik Maas) is added and it jumps back.
Is Akshaya Tritiya on the same day everywhere?
Not always. In London, New York, Toronto, Dubai, Johannesburg the date differs from New Delhi, because tithis are read at local sunrise or sunset and these places are many hours away from India. Use the city table above, or the calendar with your own location.
