What is Mangal Dosha

Mangal Dosha, also called Manglik Dosha, is the name for Mars standing in certain houses of the birth chart. It is checked mainly before marriage, because Mars is the planet of heat, drive and argument, and these houses relate to the self, home, partnership and shared life.

How it is worked out

Count the house Mars occupies from the Lagna. Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house is the usual rule. Some astrologers also include the 2nd house, and some repeat the count from the Moon and from Venus. The checker uses the five-house rule and shows the others as extra information.

Common cancellations

Traditional remedies

Traditional remedies are acts of devotion, discipline and kindness: prayer, simple fasting, charity and mantra. They cost little or nothing, and they can be kept up quietly at home.

Questions

Is Mangal Dosha common?

By the 1-4-7-8-12 rule Mars falls in five of the twelve houses, so roughly 4 in 10 charts show it before any cancellation is considered. In a test on thousands of ordinary charts, about half of the charts that showed it also met at least one of the computed reductions (own or exalted sign, Jupiter, or the Moon), before counting the partner and age. That is why astrologers weigh the cancellations and the whole chart.

Must two Manglik people marry each other?

It is a custom, not a rule. Many families prefer it because the two charts are said to balance each other, but the choice belongs to you and your family.

Before you act on this

Doshas are traditional patterns, not diagnoses. Astrologers differ on the rules and on how much weight to give them, and no single pattern can predict an outcome. Be careful of anyone who describes a dosha as dangerous and then sells an expensive gemstone, yantra or large puja. A trusted family priest rarely needs you to spend heavily, and gemstones cannot be proven to work.

Never delay a medical, legal or safety decision because of a dosha, and do not let one pattern decide a marriage.
