About Kartik Purnima
Kartik Purnima, the full moon of Kartik, closes the holiest month of the year. People take a dip in the Ganga or another river at dawn, give lamps (deep daan) and charity, and worship Vishnu and Shiva. In Varanasi it is Dev Deepawali, the “Diwali of the gods”, when the ghats are lit with lakhs of diyas in the evening.
It is also Tripuri Purnima, remembering Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura. Sikhs celebrate the birth of Guru Nanak (Guru Nanak Jayanti, Gurpurab) on this full moon, and the Pushkar fair reaches its peak.
How the date is decided
This calendar lists the day on which Kartik Purnima is running in the evening (Pradosh Kaal), which is when Dev Deepawali lamps are lit. The morning snan is taken on the day Purnima is present at sunrise; when the full moon begins in the afternoon, the two can fall on different days, so check the tithi times above.
How it is observed
- A dawn dip in a holy river, ending the month of Kartik snan.
- Deep daan: lamps floated on the river or lit at temples and ghats.
- Satyanarayan katha, and charity of food, clothes and lamps.
- Dev Deepawali on the ghats of Varanasi; Gurpurab in gurdwaras.
Puja vidhi: how to do the puja
- Bathe before sunrise, in a river if you can, or with a little Ganga jal in your bath water.
- Offer arghya to the Sun, and worship Vishnu with tulsi and Shiva with water and bel leaves.
- Hear or read the Satyanarayan katha and offer panjiri, fruits and panchamrit.
- Give charity: food, clothes, sesame or lamps, as the family can.
- In the evening, light diyas at home, at a temple or at the riverbank, and float a lamp on the water if you are near one.

Katha: Shiva destroys Tripura
The three sons of the demon Tarakasura built three flying cities, of gold, silver and iron, together called Tripura. They had a boon that the cities could be destroyed only when all three came into one line, and only by a single arrow. Safe in their fortresses, they began to torment the three worlds.
On the full moon of Kartik the three cities came into line. Shiva, riding a chariot made of the earth with the Sun and Moon as its wheels, released one arrow and burned all three. He became Tripurari, the enemy of Tripura, and the gods came down to Kashi and lit lamps in celebration. That is the Dev Deepawali still lit on the ghats.

A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, so the date moves earlier by roughly that much each year, until a leap month (Adhik Maas) is added and it jumps back.
