About Tulsi Vivah
Tulsi Vivah is the ceremonial marriage of the Tulsi (holy basil) plant to Vishnu, worshipped as Shaligram or as Krishna. It is held in the bright fortnight of Kartik, after Dev Uthani (Prabodhini) Ekadashi, when Vishnu is said to wake from his four months of rest.
The day marks the end of Chaturmas and the start of the Hindu wedding season. Families decorate the Tulsi pot like a bride and perform a small wedding with the same steps as a human one.
How the date is decided
This calendar lists Tulsi Vivah on the day on which Kartik Shukla Dwadashi is running in the evening (Pradosh Kaal). Many families perform it on the evening of Dev Uthani Ekadashi itself, and some on any day up to Kartik Purnima, so follow your family custom.
How it is observed
- The Tulsi pot is dressed as a bride with a red chunari and bangles.
- A canopy of sugarcane stalks is made over the Tulsi.
- Shaligram or a Krishna idol is carried around the Tulsi for the pheras.
- Weddings, which pause during Chaturmas, begin again.
Puja vidhi: how to do the puja
- Clean the place around the Tulsi and decorate the pot with rangoli, and tie four sugarcane stalks over it as a mandap.
- Dress the Tulsi as a bride: a red chunari, bangles, bindi, sindoor and a garland.
- Place Shaligram or an idol of Vishnu or Krishna beside her, worship Ganesh first, then offer both haldi, roli, akshat, flowers and sweets.
- Tie the two together with a cloth (gathbandhan) and carry Shaligram around the Tulsi seven times as the pheras, chanting or singing.
- Perform aarti, offer seasonal fruits like amla, ber and water chestnut, and share the prasad.

Katha: Vrinda and Shaligram
Vrinda was the devoted wife of Jalandhar, a mighty asura. Her devotion made him invincible, and the gods could not defeat him. To end his tyranny, Vishnu came to Vrinda in Jalandhar’s form; her vow was broken, and Jalandhar fell in battle.
When Vrinda learned the truth she cursed Vishnu to become a stone, and he became Shaligram. She gave up her body, and from it grew the Tulsi plant. Vishnu blessed her: no worship of his would be complete without Tulsi, and he would marry her every year. Tulsi Vivah keeps that promise.

Is Tulsi Vivah on Ekadashi or Dwadashi?
Both are followed. Many families hold it on the evening of Dev Uthani Ekadashi, others on Dwadashi, which this page lists. Some keep it on any day until Kartik Purnima.
Can weddings be held after Tulsi Vivah?
Yes. Weddings are generally avoided during Chaturmas, and the season of auspicious wedding dates begins after Dev Uthani Ekadashi and Tulsi Vivah. Check a muhurat for the exact date.
Why does the date of Tulsi Vivah change every year?
Tulsi Vivah follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar. It is tied to Shukla paksha Dwadashi of the month of Kartik, not to a fixed Gregorian date. A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, so the date moves earlier by roughly that much each year, until a leap month (Adhik Maas) is added and it jumps back.
Is Tulsi Vivah on the same day everywhere?
For the cities checked (New Delhi, London, New York, Toronto, Sydney, Dubai, Singapore, Johannesburg) the date is the same. Dates can still differ in other places, because tithis are read at local sunrise or sunset.
