About Mauni Amavasya
Mauni Amavasya is the new moon of Magha, the most important bathing day of the Magh Mela at the Sangam in Prayagraj, and of the Kumbh in the years it is held. “Mauni” comes from mauna, silence: many people keep silence for the day, or at least until their bath.
It is also a day for remembering ancestors with tarpan of sesame and water, and for charity of sesame, blankets and food in the winter cold. Tradition holds that Manu, the first man, was born on this day.
How the date is decided
Mauni Amavasya is kept on the day on which the Amavasya of Magha (Pausha in the Amanta calendar) is running at sunrise, because the holy bath is taken at dawn.
How it is observed
- A dip at the Sangam, the Ganga or any river at dawn, often in silence.
- Silence (mauna vrat) for the day, with japa or meditation.
- Tarpan for ancestors with black sesame and water.
- Charity of sesame, jaggery, blankets and food.
Puja vidhi: how to do the puja
- Wake before sunrise and, if you are keeping mauna, do not speak from this point.
- Bathe in a river, or add Ganga jal to your bath water, thinking of the holy rivers.
- Offer arghya to the Sun from a copper lota.
- Offer tarpan to your ancestors: water with black sesame and kush grass, facing south.
- Give charity of sesame, jaggery, blankets or food, and spend the day in japa, reading or quiet.

Katha: Why the day is kept in silence
The sages taught that speech scatters the mind and silence gathers it. A muni is one who keeps mauna, and on this dark night of Magha, when the Sun and Moon are together, a day of silence was held to give the fruit of many days of austerity. Tradition also says that Manu, from whom all people descend, was born on this Amavasya.
Since the time of the Puranas, pilgrims have gathered at the meeting of the Ganga, Yamuna and the hidden Saraswati in the month of Magha. Bathing at the Sangam on Mauni Amavasya, quietly and before sunrise, is held to be the crown of the Magh Mela.

Is Mauni Amavasya the main bath of the Magh Mela?
Yes. It draws the largest crowd of the annual Magh Mela at Prayagraj, and in Kumbh years it is the main royal bath (Amrit Snan).
Why does the date of Mauni Amavasya change every year?
Mauni Amavasya follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar. It is tied to Amavasya (Krishna paksha) of the month of Magha (Purnimanta) · Pausha (Amanta), not to a fixed Gregorian date. A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, so the date moves earlier by roughly that much each year, until a leap month (Adhik Maas) is added and it jumps back.
Is Mauni Amavasya on the same day everywhere?
For the cities checked (New Delhi, London, New York, Toronto, Sydney, Dubai, Singapore, Johannesburg) the date is the same. Dates can still differ in other places, because tithis are read at local sunrise or sunset.
