About Vasant Panchami
Vasant Panchami, on Shukla Panchami of Magha, welcomes spring. It is above all the day of Saraswati, goddess of learning, speech and music: students place their books and pens before her, musicians their instruments, and small children are often given their first lesson in writing (vidyarambh).
Yellow is the colour of the day, for the mustard fields in flower: people wear yellow, offer yellow flowers and cook saffron rice and yellow sweets. In Bengal and the east it is Saraswati Puja, with pandals and community worship.
How the date is decided
Vasant Panchami is kept on the day on which Magha Shukla Panchami is running in the forenoon (Purvahna, from sunrise to midday), the time preferred for Saraswati puja.
How it is observed
- Saraswati puja with books, pens and instruments placed before her.
- Yellow clothes, yellow flowers and yellow sweets.

- Kites in some regions; in Punjab and Rajasthan, a spring fair.
Puja vidhi: how to do the puja
- Bathe in the morning and wear yellow or white clothes.
- Spread a yellow cloth and place an image of Saraswati on it, with books, pens, notebooks and musical instruments in front.
- Offer haldi, akshat, yellow flowers, kesar and white sandalwood, and light a diya and incense.
- Offer saffron rice, boondi or other yellow sweets and seasonal ber; recite the Saraswati vandana below.
- Perform aarti; if a child is beginning school, help them write their first letters or “Om” on a slate or in rice.

Katha: How Saraswati brought sound to the world
When Brahma had created the world, he looked at it and found it silent and still, without a voice or a song. He sprinkled water from his kamandal, and from it rose a radiant goddess holding a veena and a book, with a rosary in her hand.
As she played the veena, the rivers began to murmur, the wind to sing and the birds to call, and living beings received speech. Brahma named her Saraswati, goddess of speech and wisdom. Her appearance is celebrated on Magha Shukla Panchami.

The best-known prayer to Saraswati, recited in schools and at the start of study. It asks the goddess, white as jasmine, the moon and snow, holding the veena and seated on a white lotus, to remove all dullness of mind.

A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, so the date moves earlier by roughly that much each year, until a leap month (Adhik Maas) is added and it jumps back.
