What Rahu Kaal is
Rahu Kaal is a period of about an hour and a half each day, linked with the shadow planet Rahu. The time from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts, and on each weekday one fixed part is Rahu Kaal: the 2nd on Monday, the 3rd on Saturday, the 4th on Friday, the 5th on Wednesday, the 6th on Thursday, the 7th on Tuesday and the 8th on Sunday.
It is observed most strictly in South India, and people across the country now check it before starting anything new. In Guwahati the length of the day changes with the season, so Rahu Kaal is sometimes a little shorter than an hour and a half and sometimes longer.
